This article describes the wheat-breeding work of Italian agronomist Nazareno Strampelli, who was first to cross Japanese and western wheat varieties develop high-yielding semidwarf wheat. The environmental agricultural conditions that motivated Strampelli's breeding, evolution his varieties, their role in addressing food supply problems Fascist Italy, some attitudes about improvement regime influence heritage for later improvements.
